Dressed down day? Katie Holmes opts for casual comfort shopping day

Casual Katie: Mrs Tom Cruise enjoyed a dressed down day yesterday as she hit the shops in LA yesterday


On Thursday evening she had looked every inch the Hollywood starlet as she graced the red carpet at an awards ceremony – but yesterday was clearly a dress down day for Katie Holmes.

The actress took in a spot of shopping at Barney’s in Beverly Hills wearing a pair of skinny jeans a pink vest top and flat pumps, a much more casual look compared to her polished appearance the night before.

Katie appeared to have forgone any makeup and had her hair scraped up into a messy top bun.

The mother–of-one perused the show section of the store enjoying a some alone time retail therapy.

Katie had taken centre stage the night before as her husband Tom Cruise was honoured by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre.

The 32-year-old actress looked stunning in the black dress with green sash, which she teamed with black sandals, as she posed with Cruise outside the event.

However, it was inside the event that Holmes really stood out from the crowd, as she glowed while applauding the honorees at the ceremony.

The couple were also accompanied by Cruise's 16-year-old adopted son Connor as the Mission: Impossible actor was presented with the Humanitarian Award - the highest honour bestowed by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, a Jewish rights organisation which also educates people about the Nazi Holocaust.

Cruise, who played a German military officer who planned an assassination of Adolf Hitler in the 2008 film Valkyrie, was honoured for his support of the organisation throughout his life.

Absent from the ceremony was the couple's five-year-old daughter Suri, who is perhaps too young for such an occasion.

Despite reports that she and her husband are planning to have more children, Holmes recently insisted that she is happy with the size of her family.

She also said that Cruise and ex-wife Nicole Kidman's adopted children Connor and 18-year-old Isabella get on incredibly well with Suri.

'We have a really busy household, and it's really fun and fulfilling. There's always something going on.'

But last night Katie Holmes managed to take centre stage as Tom Cruise was being honoured by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre by turning up at the event in a low-cut dress which drew attention to her cleavage.

What Suri wants, Suri gets: Katie Holmes has revealed her daughter has grand plans for her 5th birthday party later this month


Suri Cruise may be the most indulged child in Hollywood, so it's no surprise that her mother Katie Holmes is planning a rather lavish affair for her upcoming 5th birthday.

The former Dawson's Creek star also said she planned to 'girl it up' for the April 18 celebration.

Speaking on a US radio show today, Katie, 32, said: 'Suri's turns five in about two weeks.

'She wants a piñata and her girlfriends to come over, and some swimming.


'We're going to make a cake together,' she adds. 'We're going to have a little tea party. I kind of like to girl it up.'

Katie also said that husband Tom Cruise 'inspired' her and that he was an amazing singer and dancer.

Cruise is currently preparing for a role in the 80s-themed musical Rock of Ages and will star alongside Dancing With The Stars champ Julianne Hough.

Katie said: 'It's a very dynamic role and he's so excited to do it and work with Julianne. He's thrilled.'

When asked if Cruise was a good singer and dancer, Katie replied: 'He's fantastic.

'He knows how to prepare for things and he really puts the work in and strives for the best. It's inspiring.'

Katie also spoke about playing Jackie O in the new mini series The Kennedys which aired in the U.S. last night to mixed reviews.

Rather surprisingly, radio host Ryan Seacrest did not ask her about the controversy surrounding the project, which was axed by the History Channel and condemned as a historical distortion by Kennedy associates, admirers and others.

Asked about playing the American icon, she said: 'I didn't know that much about the Kennedys. But I had a great time doing all of my research.

'My respect for and admiration for Jackie just grew with every story that I read and seeing the footage of her and really trying to understand who these people were.

'Because we do have them on a pedestal and they were so important to our country.

'What we're trying to achieve with the mini series is showing the human side of them.
'We set out to make it almost like a Greek tragedy.'

Katie added: 'We created a lot of Jackie's looks and it was a lot of fun.

'I still look to her fashion today and it inspires what I wear.'
