Lingerie Looks Work at Araks

Full disclosure: I know Araks Yeramyan personally. While not BFFs, I adore her style and was looking forward to seeing her collection up close. A Parson grad, Araks launched her lingerie line in 2000, followed by swimwear in '04 and ready-to-wear in 2005. The designer has many celeb clients including Sophia Coppala who put Scarlett Johansson in Araks underthings in the film Lost in Translation. Araks told WWD, “My lingerie has always had more of a ready-to-wear feeling, so I felt that was the next logical step.”

I went into her Autumn 2010 Presentation expecting intricate, lacy braletts under diaphanous menswear-inspired pieces. What I didn't expect was how decidedly wearable everything would be. Boutique owners will covet the boiled wool, high waisted, full leg trousers in a color the designer refers to as "sierra," and the belted navy, or "sea," maxi coat.

Araks brings fancy party looks, like the organza bralette combo dress, downtown with each model wearing the same Doc Martin-esque black combat boots. Skinny belts ground pieces that fall nicely into the pajama, underwear as outerwear trend. The hair and makeup was also on trend: ballerina buns and dark lips on pale faces. What didn't work as well was the high necked pointed collars that would be impossible for anyone, other than a flat chested model, to look sexy in. Because, you know, these Ds want to feel pretty too.
